WHY I CHOOSE TO HAVE A PERSONAL TRAINER?
By Louise Lemieux Bérubé Recently, a friend made the remark that it had been a little over a year that I had been doing strength training every week with a coach. "You must be able to do everything by yourself now, right? " My answer was very spontaneous. I explained the reasons I continue to work with my coach. First, it represents a commitment for me to have an appointment scheduled with another person, my coach. I like that I cannot say "I will later today, or tomorrow I’ll go to the gym, etc. " Secondly, I could of course go to the gym and prepare each piece of equipment; the seat, the other settings and set the weight. I could record my results in my notebook. That’s easy. But having someone who encourages me, motivates me, tells me " you are strong", "you can keep going", etc., that’s invaluable, especially when you have a qualified and attentive coach, such is my coach; Randall*! It goes beyond preparing each device and recording my results. Sometimes I try to train alone. I can, and I manage to finish my routines. Some days I chose to focus on the muscles in my arms and the following week, I will choose my leg muscles. Rarely, have I managed to do a complete routine. I would never have had the motivation to continue training for so long had I tried to do it by myself. I've thought that if I wanted to train alone some time I could do so by myself one week, and then the following week with my coach. A week with, and then a week without. Or every week add, a session by myself, in addition to my weekly session with my coach. I might try that. I’ll let you know how that goes. That being said, I do find it so easy and fun to do it with my coach. * Randall Lightbown is a Personal Training Specialist and professional certified masso-kinesitherapist. WHY ARE MUSCLES IMPORTANT? By Erik Ouellet Osteopath Simply because they participate in every aspect of our lives! As a species, we love to defy gravity with movement. It’s our favorite thing! We have evolved around the premise that we can stand up straight, see far into the horizon and carry stuff. Either heavy loads of food to feed our family and communities or to lift our children to keep them close and safe. Strong, healthy muscles make everything easier all while making the small things, effortless. From getting ourselves out of bed in the morning, to walking up the stairs with grocery bags. Muscles are indispensable to our physical and mental well being. They provide us with power and energy to accomplish everyday tasks and undertake unexpected challenges. They allow us to reap the benefits of feeling healthy and give us the satisfaction of looking good. Obviously, muscles allow us to act out in the world and require a solid foundation. A body that can lift heavy loads also needs strong bones. It’s no coincidence that strong muscles also participate to building sturdy bones, even reversing the effects of osteoporosis and alleviating the pain of arthrosis. Strong muscles are not only medicine, they are a fountain of youth. Do yourselves and everybody you love a favor; work those muscles, so you can be strong in the world. I’m not a big fan of giving someone a gift certificate for an exercise class because it’s always better when we decide ourselves to start exercising, and not when someone else tells us we should - in the form of a gift certificate.
